Lincoln Lures: Football Dreams, Family Fun, and Unexpected Delights at Washingborough Hall

Our recent trip to Lincoln, fueled by an U8 football match for our son Gabriel (playing against Lincoln City FC Academy, no less!), turned into a captivating adventure filled with history, family fun, and unexpected discoveries – a night at a wonderful, luxury, foodie country house hotel.

While cheering on Gabriel and his team was the initial draw, Lincoln itself surprised and delighted us. Finding a comfortable and luxurious haven close to the action was a priority. Thankfully, Washingborough Hall Hotel a charming Grade II listed Georgian Manor House just outside the city center, became our home away from home.

Stepping inside the elegant Washingborough Hall was like stepping back in time. Our room, number 14, was a haven of comfort and luxury, with plush fabrics, sumptuous furnishings, and a king-size bed that promised a restful night’s sleep after a day of cheering. Views to the herb garden But what truly stole our hearts were the little touches, the luxurious toiletries, and the friendly staff who went above and beyond to ensure our comfort.

Beyond the hotel’s elegance and the warmth of its staff lies a fascinating history. Washingborough Hall boasts a rich tapestry dating back to around 1730, when it was built as a private residence by the Fairfax family. Every generation of owners has added their own unique touch, shaping the building we see today.

The current owners, Edward and Lucy Herring, have meticulously restored the building, respecting its heritage while adding modern comforts. They’ve transformed the space, adding the stunning Winston Room Orangery in 2015, named in honor of Sir Winston Churchill. Their dedication to preserving history is evident in the charming details throughout the hotel, from the names of the rooms reflecting past residents to the cozy sitting rooms where guests can relax with a drink, admiring the views.

One fascinating historical anecdote is the story of Sir William Amcotts-Ingilby, one of the Hall’s former owners. Known for his eccentric personality and flamboyant attire, he was a prominent figure in Lincolnshire during the early 19th century.

Our family’s culinary journey began at the hotel’s award-winning 2 AA rosette restaurant. As we settled in, the aroma of fresh, local ingredients filled the air, whetting our appetites for the culinary delights to come.

A feast fit for royalty:

• Starters: We began with a delightful selection of starters, each showcasing the chef’s creativity and respect for seasonal produce. The Jerusalem Artichoke & Thyme Velouté, a silky smooth soup bursting with earthy notes, was pure comfort food heaven. The Marinated & Charred Mackerel, balanced perfectly with smoky tomato salsa and sweetcorn, offered a vibrant explosion of flavor in every bite. The Marmalade & Thyme Scotch Egg, a delightful twist on a classic pub favorite, surprised us with its touch of citrus and a perfectly runny yolk.
• Main Courses: The main courses were a true testament to the culinary expertise at Washingborough Hall. The Roast Guinea Fowl Breast, melt-in-your-mouth tender, was paired with decadent truffle and creamy spinach, creating a luxurious and flavorful masterpiece. For those seeking a heartier option, the Pan Roast Sirloin Steak, cooked to a perfect medium-rare, was a carnivore’s dream, complemented by crispy chips and a rich au poivre sauce. The Garlic Roast Chicken Breast offered a comforting and flavorful choice, with the garlic and wild garlic broth infusing the chicken for a truly satisfying dish.
• Sweet Endings: No meal is complete without dessert, and Washingborough Hall didn’t disappoint. The Preserved Amaretto & Lemon Pear Frangipane offered a textural delight, with a sweet and tangy filling encased in a buttery pastry crust. The Lemon Posset, light and tangy, was perfectly paired with poached Yorkshire rhubarb and gingernut biscuits, providing a refreshing and delightful ending to the meal. Even our little foodie, Gabriel, couldn’t resist the rich and decadent dark chocolate sorbet.

Breakfast the next morning was just as delightful, offering a variety of fresh, local produce and cooked-to-order options that fueled our day’s exploration.

We stumbled upon the fascinating Jews’ Court, a poignant reminder of the city’s diverse cultural heritage. This unexpected discovery added another layer to our already captivating Lincoln experience.

Leaving Lincoln, we knew we’d discovered something special. This charming city offered a perfect blend of sporting excitement, historical intrigue, and a touch of luxury. But for us, a highlight was undoubtedly the exceptional food and hospitality experienced at Washingborough Hall, all woven into the rich tapestry of the hotel’s history.
