Zog – A Freckle Production – World Premiere at the Rose Theatre.

It’s not often that you get to attend a world premiere. It’s our second time watching a Freckle Production though, the first being a wonderful adaptation of Tiddler and other Terrific Tales, a show so effective that it changed the way I read the book to my children, singing it to their tune instead of simply reading it.

So, it’s with great excitement that we travel south of the river to the Rose Theatre in Kingston, to catch the last day of Julia Donaldson and Axel Sheffler’s famous book, Zog, before its departure on a UK tour.

Donaldson and Sheffler are best known for their modern classic, the Gruffalo. Loved by children and adults alike but Zog, although less famous than their other character, doesn’t take long to win over the audience’s heart. A little dragon, keen to win a gold star from Madam Dragon at school, embarks upon an adventure growing up with his dragon classmates. We follow them whilst they learn to fly, roar and breathe fire. From throwing strops in school to reciting poems about poo, with live music accompaniment on stage, this production is filled with fun, laughter and of course a serious message about saving the world, being a good person, choosing kindness and helping others.

Catchy tunes and a beautiful final ballad, this first ever stage production of Zog, which, first published in 2010 won the Galaxy National Children’s book of the year, proves to be a roaring success ( excuse the pun!). Catch them on tour here.
